How to eat at Tokyo’s best ramen shops

  • Expect a queue. The top shops have lines at peak times. Go 15–30 minutes before opening, or mid-afternoon on a weekday. Some popular shops hand out numbered tickets or take online reservations for set times — check the shop’s page or social media.
  • Use the ticket machine. Most shops have a vending machine by the door: buy your ticket first, then hand it to the staff. Many machines take cash only, and some don’t take ¥10,000 notes.
  • Check opening days. Many shops close two or three days a week, and some close early when the soup runs out.
  • Eat promptly. Ramen is meant to be eaten hot and fast — and others are waiting for your seat.
  • Solo is normal. Most ramen shops are counters, perfect for eating alone.
