TOKYO’S TOP 10 THAI RESTAURANTS

Thai food in Tokyo has grown up. Twenty years ago it meant green curry and pad thai in a cheerful Kabukicho dining room. Today the city also has eight-seat tasting counters, modern Thai bistros cooking with Japanese produce, and chefs who trained for years in Thailand and pound their curry pastes by hand in a stone mortar.

Our database holds 13 Thai restaurants in Tokyo recognised in the Top 100 Restaurants awards. Ranked by rating, here are the ten highest — one Michelin-starred, several under ¥4,000, and one you can eat at for less than ¥2,000.

1. KHAO — 3.96

Jimbocho · ¥15,000–19,999 · 8 seats · ★ Michelin 1 Star
The best Thai restaurant in Tokyo by any measure. Husband-and-wife team Koichi Ishiyama and Yori Hozumi met in Thailand, where Hozumi spent three years learning traditional cooking, and ran a restaurant in Nagoya before opening KHAO in 2024. About a year later it became the first Thai restaurant in Tokyo to earn a Michelin star. One set course only, built on regional Thai flavours with hand-pounded pastes and Japanese ingredients. Dinner from 18:00, closed Wednesdays and Sundays, a minute from Jimbocho Station. Reservation only — book well ahead.

2. BIANCHI — 3.90

Roppongi · Dinner ¥6,000–7,999 · 39 seats
A casual Roppongi bistro that cooks Thai street food and Thai-Chinese dishes with top Japanese ingredients — the lively à la carte sister of a high-end Thai omakase. Dinner runs Monday to Saturday from 17:30. At lunch the same room becomes BIANCHI mini me (rated 3.67, ¥2,000–2,999), whose gapao rice uses chunks of Tokyo X pork rather than mince. Both are two minutes from Roppongi Station; hours change often, so check their Instagram before going.

3. Mimotto (タイ料理 みもっと) — 3.73

Meguro · ¥15,000–19,999 · 9 seats
A nine-seat L-shaped counter serving a single omakase course of about a dozen dishes, drawn from a different region of Thailand each month. Pastes and dressings are ground by hand in a stone mortar. Three fixed start times each evening (17:30, 19:00 and 20:00), Tuesday to Saturday; reservation required. About seven minutes’ walk from Meguro Station.

4. Thai Curry Pikinu (タイカリーピキヌー) — 3.72

Komazawa · ¥1,000–1,999 · 25 seats
The bargain of the list, and the only one filed under Curry rather than Asian. A small neighbourhood shop down a lane near Komazawa-Daigaku Station, run by an older couple, cooking Thai curries to order at your chosen spice level — regulars swear by the green curry. Walk-in only; lunch and dinner, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

5. Ban Thai (バンタイ) — 3.65

Shinjuku (Kabukicho) · ¥3,000–3,999 · 110 seats
A big, busy Thai restaurant on the third floor of a Kabukicho building, cooking authentic, properly spicy food rather than a version toned down for Japanese tastes. The menu goes well beyond pad thai and green curry, with crab curry and less common dishes such as catfish stir-fried with red curry paste. Open every day, straight through from 11:30 on weekends — and with 110 seats, the easiest table on this list to get.

6. Mango Tree Tokyo (マンゴツリー東京) — 3.65

Marunouchi · ¥8,000–9,999 · 60 seats
The Tokyo branch of Bangkok’s Mango Tree, on the 35th floor of the Marunouchi Building beside Tokyo Station, with big windows over the station and the city skyline. The Thai lunch buffet — som tam, pad thai, gai yang, green curry and noodles cooked to order — is the best-value way in. Open daily; semi-private rooms make it a good choice for groups and business dinners.

7. Old Thailand Iidabashi (オールドタイランド 飯田橋店) — 3.65

Iidabashi · ¥3,000–3,999 · 43 seats
A busy second-floor dining room run by Thai cooks, known for spicy, vegetable-heavy dishes. Order the khao soi, the soft-shell crab curry or the green curry. Lunch sets come with tom yum soup, and queues form before opening. Lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday, closed Sundays; four minutes from Iidabashi Station.

8. Myao Myao (タイ料理 ミャオミャオ) — 3.62

Hatagaya · ¥4,000–4,999 · 29 seats
A bright, modern neighbourhood spot two minutes from Hatagaya Station, often full even on weekdays. Look for the stir-fried egg curry with oysters or soft-shell crab, and the Thai-herb highballs. Lunch sets are good value. Closed Wednesdays; dinner only on Thursdays.

9. thalee ling — 3.61

Yoyogi-Uehara · Dinner ¥10,000–14,999 · Lunch ¥5,000–5,999 · 23 seats
A modern Thai restaurant that calls its style “Japa-Thai”: seasonal Japanese seafood and produce, Thai flavours, and set courses that change with the season, with wine or non-alcoholic pairings. Dinner nightly except Wednesday, lunch on weekends and holidays. Card or cashless payment only. Five minutes from Yoyogi-Uehara Station.

10. Modern Thai CIEL — 3.55

Kita-Sando · Dinner ¥8,000–9,999 · Lunch ¥2,000–2,999 · 22 seats
An antique-style dining room serving classic Thai dishes — glass-noodle salad, tom yum kung, green curry — alongside seasonal market dishes, with careful plating and a sommelier-chosen wine list. Dinner is an omakase course; lunch (Sundays and Mondays) is a five-dish prix fixe. Closed Wednesdays. Three minutes from Kita-Sando Station.

Tips for eating Thai in Tokyo

  • Two kinds of Thai. KHAO, Mimotto, thalee ling and CIEL serve set courses and need a reservation. Ban Thai, Old Thailand, Myao Myao and Pikinu are walk-in, order-what-you-like places.
  • Ask for it spicier. Many Tokyo kitchens tone down the heat by default. If you want it the way it’s served in Bangkok, say so.
  • Lunch is the bargain. BIANCHI mini me, CIEL, thalee ling and Mango Tree all offer lunch at a fraction of the dinner price.
  • Budgets are per person, food only. Drinks are extra.
