SAPPORO’S TOP 10 SUSHI RESTAURANTS (AND HOKKAIDO’S BEST)

Hokkaido is where much of Japan’s best seafood comes from: sea urchin from Rishiri and Rebun, salmon roe, hairy crab, scallops, and cold-water fish such as kinki (thornhead) and botan-ebi shrimp. Eating sushi in Sapporo means eating it close to the source.

Our database holds 23 Hokkaido sushi restaurants in the Top 100 Restaurants awards. Ranked by rating, here are the ten highest — nine in Sapporo, mostly around quiet Maruyama, central Odori and the Susukino nightlife district, plus one in Asahikawa.

Tips for sushi in Sapporo

  • Where to stay: Odori and Susukino are the best bases; Maruyama is two or three subway stops west on the Tozai Line. See every top-rated restaurant near Odori Station or near Susukino Station.
  • Seasons: sea urchin peaks in summer; winter brings crab and the fattiest fish.
  • Book ahead, especially at weekends and in the snow-festival season (February).
  • Prices are lower than Tokyo’s top counters — most here are ¥20,000–39,999.
